New Years Resolutionists

December 31, 2011

As the month changes and a new year begins, many of us look at the calendar and tell the world we are going to do things differently in the new year. We are all aware of “New Years Resolutions” and we are probably also aware of how many of them actually last! The biggest thing that messes everybody up is we all make goals that there is no way we can reach. How many times have you heard that a person is going to lose 50 pounds? And then how many of them actually follow through and lose 10? They just think that losing weight is going to happen simply because they say they are going to do it.

So let’s talk about some goals here and how you can make them better. I’ve addressed this before in a couple of posts linked below, but I’ll re-discuss some of these topics.

SMART Goals

Actions Match Goals?

Want to lose weight? But gotta have your Big Mac? How well is that going to work? Another thought is people decide to “run a marathon to lose weight” which is definitely not a good idea.

So how do we go about coming up with goals that make sense? Use the SMART Principle

Specific

Measurable

Achievable

Relevant

Time bound

I think another big key is to have goals known. Tell your workout partner what you want to achieve. Tell your spouse. That way they can hopefully help keep you accountable.
