Reason #4 Your School Needs an Athletic Trainer

August 13, 2011

4. Athletic trainers are proactive and spend a lot of time trying to prevent injury.

Many people think Athletic Trainers tape ankles and hand out water. Hopefully over the last few days, you’ve realized that isn’t the case. We do quite a bit more than that. I will say, however, that those are two very important jobs for us in many settings. Those both fall under the domain of prevention. We are hoping to prevent an ankle sprain by providing some support to that ankle for example. Also, we try to keep our athletes hydrated to hopefully prevent heat illnesses.

We also prevent injuries through “prehab” exercises. We work to correct muscle imbalances, flexibility deficiencies, and developing muscle strength. We choose exercises that mimic sports-related activities and work to activate muscles to work together at the correct times needed to perform to the athlete’s best ability.
